Common AI Writing Mistakes that Make Your Writing Dull & Boring

Updated: Aug 7

common mistakes of Ai writing

AI writing tools changed the writing industry and how we used to write.

It’s been almost two years since ChatGPT was released. This tool was developed to make content writing easier and faster. Now, anyone and their nan can whip up a 1000-word content piece using a template in less than 15 minutes. But you can see the consequences, too—dull, boring, and generic content that no one bothers to read is everywhere.

Reason?

The writers or (AI content creators) are making some recurring mistakes. The AI writing tools are not being used properly.

The writing industry has evolved. AI writing is here to stay. But it’s only beneficial if done right.

In this blog, I will discuss those common AI writing mistakes and give you solutions to tackle them.

How AI Writing Tools Work

Before I discuss the mistakes, I need you to understand the following concept.

AI writing tools like ChatGPT are trained on the large language model (LLM ). They can ‘generate’ and ‘produce’ language (content, in our case). They don’t ‘copy-paste’ or ‘plagiarize’ any text.

As you know, a machine works in a certain way, and almost all AI writing tools generate text using certain patterns.

Here are some of my observations of AI writing tools;

They;

  • Don’t bend any writing rules.

  • Strictly follow grammar rules.

  • Mostly write in too much formal tone.

  • Have the same pattern of writing each para.

  • Use a specific vocabulary for all kinds of topics.

  • Don’t have any STYLE or TONE even if you prompt one.

When you understand these patterns, you will better cope with AI's robot-ness. Sure, you can’t break the basic writing rule or use incorrect grammar just to sound “human.” Still, you can bend the conventional rules to infuse personality in your writing unless you convey your message clearly.

7 Common AI Content Writing Mistakes to Avoid at All Costs

Here are the 7 most common AI content writing mistakes that dull your content, like the hundreds of other useless things on the internet.

  1. Fully Relying on AI Writing Tools

I’ve seen a flood of wanna-be content writers in 2023 just because they thought ChatGPT would write everything for them.

They never train their writing muscle. They never get into the craft practicing. They don’t know the difference between good and poor writing. So from research to outlines to writing their final draft, they rely on AI.

If you started SEO content writing in 2023 and were exposed to AI tools, stop using them for a while, learn the basics, and practice your writing.

2. Using one Template to Write the whole piece

There is a reason you see the “New Chat” button in ChatGPT every time you want to write about a new topic. It’s basically a conversation between you and the AI, and the best conversation is never one-sided.

You can’t get the best outcome in one prompt. Templated prompts lack customization, context, and details of your specific project.

If you want the best results, try custom prompts and follow the ‘conversation’ rule. One point at a time. Don’t choke everything at once.

3. Not doing the SERP(s) analysis and neglecting fact-checking

SERP (Search Engine Ranking Page(s) analysis enables you to find content gaps. There is no need to write everything that has already been written. When you do that, you are not “writing” you are “curating,” and all the information is the same…that no one cares anymore.

This makes your writing monotonous.

I’ve seen that AI tools make up stats and facts that are not real.

So next time, before you even open any AI writing tool to write…do your research, get the real information, and then prompt accordingly.

4. No Personal Perspective or SME Quotes

This is one of the major reasons for generic and dull writing.

What makes your writing interesting is either your perspective on something or the perspective of an expert on the subject matter.

AI lacks both, and you need to do it manually.

If you do in-depth research and dig deep into the topic, you know exactly where to add your thoughts, opinions, and analysis.

Pro tip: If you are a newbie writer, start reading books. Books enrich your perspective and mental arena.

5. Ignoring a Specific Brand Tone and Style

You may have noticed similarities in many pieces of content from brands and websites that use AI to write content. Why so?

No matter how strictly and firmly you advise and prompt ChatGPT to follow a tone or style…it fails. At the end of the day, every tone of AI is robotic. You ask it to write in a conversational tone, and it will, but that conversational tone will sound robotic and weird. When a specific tone is the tone of many brands…it’s the tone of no one.

6. Not Breaking the AI Writing Pattern

AI uses a lot of buzzwords and repetitive phrases. If you have been using ChatGPT for a while, you know that words like “elevating,” tapestry,” “landscape,” and phrases like “in today's fast-paced world…”, “in conclusion…”, etc. are ChatGPT’s favorite ones.

Those buzzwords and phrases mostly don’t go with the semantic context of the text.

Similarly, if you use one templated prompt, you get many repetitive sentences that are fluff.

Now everyone on the internet can smell those phrases, patterns, and buzzwords.

So to make your writing read-worthy, break the patterns and remove AI words.

7. No final edits and proofreading

One of the dumbest blunders writers make is copying and pasting content from an AI tool without reading it.

Sure, AI does not make grammar and spelling mistakes but proofreading and editing are not limited to it either.

Sentence structure, content angle, and vocabulary are all parts of the editing phase.

If you are getting help from AI in writing, manually give your writing a final edit and proofreading round.

Is AI-written Content a Bad Thing?

No. It’s not bad until it conveys the message, convinces the readers, and fulfills your purpose of writing it.

Then why all the hype around human-written content?

Because humans love to read humans, AI content is feelingless and dull until a writer infuses it with personality, perspective, and depth.

You can’t get thought leadership content with AI. It lacks style or tone, so it does not establish your brand.

AI content always needs human input.

AI is as Good as Your Input

There is a proverb that says, “The work suits in the hands of one who is skilled to do it.” In 2024, there are tools for almost anything, but not everyone is skilled enough to use them correctly.

To get good writing outcomes from AI writing tools, you must first learn the craft.

ChatGPT (or any AI writing tool) is as smart as you. It will produce/generate as good writing as you prompt.

And no, I am not saying that you need to learn prompting…you need to learn writing to avoid these mistakes and make your writing good enough that people actually read.
